• Where are you located?  Our academy operates out of Balance, at 12 W. Willow Grove Avenue in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia.  Parking is free after 6pm on Germantown Ave, and the neighborhood has plenty of on-street parking as well.
  • How convenient is public transportation to your gym?  Super convenient!  There are a number of bus routes that run up and down Germantown Avenue.  In addition, we are less than a mile from a number of stations on the Chestnut Hill East and Chestnut Hill West regional rail lines.
  • Do I need to be in shape to participate?  Absolutely not!  Part of our martial arts curriculum is geared towards developing good body mechanics, increasing cardio, and improving flexibility.  The best way to get in shape for this kind of training is, well, this kind of training!
  • Are beginners welcome?  Of course!  We specialize in an approachable, easy-to-learn beginner curriculum that will get you up to cruising speed in no time.
  • Is hard contact part of the training?  Only if you want it to be.  We have special training sessions geared around effective sparring practice.  In our regular classes, there will be some contact–but it will be at your pace and comfort level.
  • What can I expect in my first month or so?  Any training program requires some adjustment.  On the technical side, you will learn how to focus your body’s energy into pinpoint strikes with your hands, elbows, knees, and feet, as well as how to defend from a variety of these attacks.  You will have improved energy, increased durability, and a little bit of soreness here and there.  Many students also find that a healthy hobby is an effective catalyst for making other healthy changes in their life–better, increased sleep, as well as smarter dietary choices.  In short, you will see some results pretty quickly!
  • What program is best for me?  We offer a free private lesson and consultation, where we go over the basics so you’ll be ready for your first class.  Additionally, we figure out exactly what level of training will best fit your goals and give you a road map to getting there.
  • I want to learn, but I am too old/heavy/out of shape/concerned/<insert excuse here> to train!  Nonsense.  We can work around most any concern or issue.  Our goal is to provide a fun, safe atmosphere for individuals of all backgrounds to experience the benefits of martial arts training first hand.  If you have a problem, we’ll do our best to find a creative solution!
  • What does “MMA” stand for?  “MMA” is an acronym for “Mixed Martial Arts,” which is an umbrella term referring to a curriculum that teaches multiple styles of martial arts.  MMA commonly refers to the “big four”: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Western Boxing, and Wrestling.  The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) popularized competitive MMA beginning in 1993 and is currently the largest MMA organization in the world.
